Understanding and controlling dandruff – causes, care & our 3-step system

Dandruff is one of the most common scalp problems – in all hair types.
Whether waves, curls or Afro hair : as soon as the scalp becomes unbalanced, it often shows this through dandruff, itching or a feeling of tightness .

📌 In this blog you will learn:

What dandruff really is

Dandruff consists of dead skin cells from the scalp that visibly flake off.
This is generally normal – it becomes problematic when:

  • skin cells renew themselves too quickly

  • they detach in larger quantities

  • Itching, redness or irritation may also occur.

Broadly speaking, there are two forms:

Dry scales

  • fine, white

  • flakes from the scalp

  • often due to dryness or improper care

Oily flakes

  • larger, yellowish

  • adhere to the scalp

  • often due to imbalance or build-up

👉 Dandruff is therefore not a hair problem , but a scalp problem .

What are the underlying causes?

Dandruff rarely arises from just one cause. Common causes include:

1. Dry or dehydrated scalp

  • Washing too frequently

  • aggressive shampoos

  • cold air / heated air

  • lack of or incorrect scalp care

  • fine, dry scales
    feeling of tension

2. Scalp imbalance

The scalp has its own microbiome .
If this process is disrupted (e.g. by stress, hormones or unsuitable products), the skin renews itself too quickly.

➡️ visible scales
➡️ frequent itching

3. Build-up & product residues

  • heavy styling products

  • Oils on untreated scalp

  • Conditioner on the scalp

➡️ Pores become blocked
➡️ Scalp reacts with dandruff

How to properly control dandruff

One key point to note beforehand:

Conditioner should not be applied to the scalp.

Why?

  • Conditioners are occlusive

  • They promote build-up

  • They can worsen dandruff.

✔ Always apply conditioner only to the lengths of the hair.
✔ The scalp is a matter for the shampoo.

Dandruff requires special shampoos.

Not every shampoo helps with dandruff.

A good anti-dandruff shampoo:

  • specifically cleanses the scalp

  • Gently removes dandruff

  • supports balance

  • does not dry out

Why a scalp massage brush is so important

When used correctly, a scalp massage brush is a real game changer.

Advantages:

  • Gently removes dandruff

  • removes build-up

  • stimulates blood circulation

  • improves the effect of the shampoo

How to use:

  • only on wet scalp

  • always with shampoo

  • Gentle pressure, no scratching motions

  • 1-2 minutes is enough
