What is PROTEIN
The primary element of hair is the protein keratin, it provides the hair with strength, protection and structure.
Protein – Moisture Balance
👩🏻🦱 At the beginning of our curl journey, we mainly focus on the moisture content of our hair. Since our hair is very dry, we assume that moisture is the solution to our problems. However, we forget one of the most important components of our hair: proteins.
👉🏼 There are proteins in hair care products that will help you to hold moisture and repair your damaged hair. There are also products with protein that can help improve your scalp condition.
👉🏼It’s important that you know your hair, because every hair has individual needs. Then you can decide what exactly your hair requires.
For example, medium to coarse texture with medium to low porosity and the strengthening factors of protein treatments can make your hair brittle. However, when your hair has had the cuticle structure altered by heat/chemical treatment, over-manipulation, or just naturally weaker finer hair with less layers of cuticle, protein can help to strengthen your hair.
Examples of different kind of proteins
✨There are different kinds of protein used in hair products with different reasons. Examples:
Hydrolyzed silk protein. Hydrolyzed silk protein has the ability to supply the hair with new keratin protein and thereby reinforce weakened hair. It infiltrates the hair shaft so that the hair gets moisturised and strengthened from within. Also, as silk protein is the strongest natural fiber known, when the protein infiltrates the hair, it creates a protective barrier around each hair strand that protects the hair from further damage.
Hydrolyzed Adansonia digitata seed extract. Derived from the baobab tree (known as the “tree of life”), hydrolyzed baobab extract is a water-soluble ingredient. It promotes a healthier scalp (which in turn promotes healthier hair growth).
Hydrolyzed keratin is a large protein molecule that is broken down after a chemical process in a manner such that it can penetrate the hair cuticle. A multifunctional and go-to strengthening protein that helps your damaged hair
Hydrolyzed soy protein is a water soluble protein derived from soy that will strengthen and mend hair fibers. It increases hair’s ability to hold moisture while adding shine and smoothness.
Hydrolyzed rice protein improves hair volume and manageability, improved shine in hair care , helps fortify hair to prevent damage, helps to improve skin’s moisture barrier
Hydrolyzed Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract. Known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, the digitata seed extract is also a skin conditioner and emollient. Certain research also reveals that the omega-3 fatty acids in this ingredient may help treat scalp eczema, dandruff, and flaking .
👍🏻 Tip for a healthy balance
It is important to have a healthy balance of products with and without protein, by knowing what your hair needs and what you want as result. This means using products with proteins as well as moisturising products.
Product examples with protein:
Hydrolyzed silk protein
Hydrolyzed rice protein
Hydrolyzed soy protein
Hydrolyzed Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract.
Incorporate protein-rich and moisturising products into your curl routine, test out different variants and find your balance. ✨
